Product Description

Chartreux has a sunny, polite disposition that makes him a pleasure to live with. He is sweet and quiet with a gentle, amenable nature. He enjoys being a lap cat and is a wonderful television-watching pal. He is an attentive and gentle companion who likes to stay near his people and observe their doings. He appreciates any attention he receives. That same good nature makes him a good travel companion for an RV enthusiast or long-distance truck driver. This breed fits nicely in a home with children. He is happy to live with cat-friendly dogs, too, thanks to his amiable disposition. Introduce pets slowly and in controlled circumstances to ensure that they learn to get along together. He is an indoor-only cat to protect him from diseases spread by other cats, attacks by dogs or coyotes, and the other dangers that face cats who go outdoors.

Size: This breed has ample body and solid muscle mass. This is a supple, agile cat who typically weighs 7 to 16 pounds at maturity. Pick him up and you may be surprised by his heft. Chartreux grow slowly and males especially may not reach their full size until they are 4 or 5 years old.

Temperament & Personality: The Chartreaux is a pleasant cat to have as a companion. She is easy going and placid. The Chartreaux is a fiercely loyal, loving cat and will attach herself to every member of her family.

Activity Requirements: Interactive play may be necessary to keep her in good shape and make certain that she gets adequate exercise.

Breed Traits: The Chartreaux likes hunting games where she can show her heritage.

Diet: 1/4 to 1/3 cup per feeding up to about 8 wks. 1/3 cup to 3/4 cup per feeding up to 6 months and beyond, depending on weight. Research shows that adult cats need a minimum of 26 percent protein in their diet.

Grooming Requirements: Chartreux’s short, thick coat is easy to care for with weekly brushing. The coat sheds in the spring and may require extra brushing during that time. A bath is rarely necessary. If your Chartreux does require a bath, remember that it can take time to get the water-repellent coat wet enough for bathing. Brush the teeth to prevent periodontal disease. Daily dental hygiene is best, but weekly brushing is better than nothing. Trim the nails every couple of weeks. Brush the teeth to prevent periodontal disease.

Colors: The tips of the fur look as if they have been lightly brushed with silver. Kittens may have the faint imprint of tabby markings (called ghost barring) or tail rings, but by the time they mature the coat should have a bright, even tone. Completing the look is slate-gray nose leather, blue lips, and rose-taupe paw pads. Eye color: Gold, Copper, Orange.

History: The Chartreaux has a religious background. This beautiful blue cat was probably brought to France from the mid-east in the 1500s. The Chartreaux were actively bred by Carthusian monks near Paris, and were probably working cats. A methodical Chartreaux breeding program was started in France in the late 1920s, which resulted in a strong, healthy Shorthaired Blue cat with a lovely face and a powerful body. The Chartreaux was imported to Britain, not only to be bred as its own breed, but also to enhance the body, coat type and coat color of the British Shorthair. During World War II, the Chartreaux was almost lost. Through the work of dedicated breeders, it has been brought back as a viable, healthy breed, although it is still relatively rare.
